Prediction of multicomponent liquid adsorption using excess quantities

Abstract: The utilization of excess quantities as the basis of a thermodynamic approach can simplify the prediction of multicomponent data from binary ones. Whereas in Part II the excess formalism was applied to the prediction of liquid phase adsorption on solids, in this paper, the liquid/air interface is investigated. In order to show the generality of the suggested approach, thermodynamic equations are developed in analogy to Part II. Surface tensions are predicted by different excess models and compared with experim… Show more

“…(6) was successfully applied to the prediction of ternary adsorption excesses and surface tension of several near-ideal and non-ideal ternary liquid mixtures [9,10]; whereas, it was less accurate in the case of strongly non-ideal mixtures [10]. In order to overcome this insufficiency, we propose here an analogical approach to that used in mixture thermodynamics.…”

“…The approach based on the measurable adsorption excess quantities can be applied to the prediction of adsorption excesses at the liquid/solid interface [9] as well as of surface tensions at the liquid/ gas interface [10]. This approach was tested for several ternary adsorption systems.…”

“…Also, the models of Fu et al, Wang-Chen and Kalies et al [13] were applied for ternary homogeneous liquid mixtures. It was anticipated that surface tension could be predicted for the ternary system just by using the surface tension of the individual pure components and evaluated binary coefficients.…”
