Prediction of peak expiratory flow rates in stunted children

Abstract: Objective: To assess the effect of stunting on peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) Main Outcome Measures: PEFR, height, weight and age of children were determined using standard techniques. Nutritional status of children was assessed using WHO/NCHS height for age, weight for age and weight for height reference standards. Results:The data of PEFR were analysed by regression on age and stature. One hundred children (18.6%)were classified as stunted. None of them was under weight or wasted. The equations for pred… Show more

“…For instance, Zverev observed in 480 Spanish children from four to seventeen years old, that the average PEF value for females was 310 L/min and for males was 345 L/min. 16 In this present study, the average PEF was 212 L/min for females and 244L/min for males, perhaps reflecting differences in PEF due to race and ethnicity, as previously reported by Tsanakas et al 19 Our investigation presents some limitations. Conventional reference value equations usually list height, age and gender as independent determinants 29 .…”

“…[10][11][12][13] The measurement of PEF is dependent on thoracoabdominal muscles and the degree of stress generated by the subject evaluated, [10][11][12][13] and since it requires maximal expiration, it is considered less useful in some populations. [14][15][16][17][18] Furthermore, there are limitations associated with the use of spirometry in children 19 . Thus, standardization of PEF is of particular importance in pediatric patients.…”

“…Diarrhoea was defined as three or more abnormally loose or watery stools during the previous 24 h (Zverev ). Stunting was defined as [height‐for‐age z‐score (HAZ) <−2.00SD], wasting [weight‐for‐height z‐score (WHZ) <−2.00SD], and underweight [weight‐for‐age z‐score (WAZ) <−2.00SD] as per WHO guidelines (Center for Disease Control, Coordinating Center for Infectious Diseases/Division of Bacterial & Mycotic Diseases ).…”

“…According to WHO growth standards, children were considered malnourished (without pedal oedema) if one of the following statistical conditions were met [20,21]: Underweight: <−2 weight-for-age z-score. Wasting: <−2 weight-for-height z-score.…”
