Prediction of PIH by Maternal Serum Beta HCG Levels in the Second Trimester (13–20 Weeks) of Pregnancy

Abstract: Objective To test the hypothesis that women with high serum beta-HCG levels in early pregnancy are at higher risk of developing PIH. Methods Serum beta-HCG estimation was done by CLIA method in 200 women between 13 and 20 weeks of gestation, selected randomly for this study from July 2008 to Aug 2009. Multiple of median (MOM) was calculated from charts of norms available for that week of pregnancy. They were followed till delivery for development of PIH and pregnancy outcome and results analysed statistically … Show more

“…reported a significant lipid profile among prenatal women who subsequently developed hypertension. By contrast, Sorensen et al., Kaur et al., and the present study found that only serum β‐hCG values were higher among pregnant women who developed hypertension. The present findings suggest that serum β‐hCG in early second trimester might be used as a predictor of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, whereas dyslipidemia would not be a useful marker of hypertension.…”

“…Kaur et al . undertook a study of 200 pregnant women, reporting that 20 of 24 women with elevated β‐hCG (>2 MOM) developed hypertension, but only 2 of 154 women with β‐hCG less than 2 MOM subsequently developed hypertension.…”

“…This is consistent with the findings of several other studies done in other ethnic group of India. [12][13][14][15] Evidence points to the placenta as a key source of factors that lead to the maternal endothelial cell destruction in preeclampsia. This is already established that the clinical signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia remit after termination of pregnancy.…”

“…It was based on the study conducted by Kaur et al which had the sensitivity of 90.91 %, the specificity of 97.44 % and the positive predictive value of 83.33 % for this cut off value. 4 In their study, 22 cases developed hypertensive disorders among 178 cases. Among 22 cases, 20 cases had β hCG levels > 2 MOM.…”
