This study investigated the thermo-chemical degradation and fast pyrolysis of watermelon seed shells (WSS), pumpkin seed shells (PSS), and sunflower seed shells (SSS). The raw materials and pyrolysis products were analyzed. The results showed that the carbon content (52.96%), hydrogen content (7.38%) and higher heating value (HHV) (23.88 MJ/kg) of PSS were highest, and the bio-oil from the PSS pyrolysis had high amounts of phenolic compounds. For SSS, the content of holocellulose (83.47 wt.%) was the highest, but the lignin content (13.62 wt.%) was lower than the other samples. The gas yield from the SSS pyrolysis was the largest and the bio-oil content of acids (acetic acid 36.53%) and ketones (1-hydroxy-2-propanone 9.90%) were higher. For WSS, the yield of the biochar was 39.14 wt.%. Additionally, the raw materials' structures were similar. The thermal decomposition process of all seed shells had three stages, i.e. dehydration, active pyrolysis, and passive pyrolysis. In all three kinds of bio-oil, the components were mainly guaiacol-type and phenol-type. The guaiacol-type in the bio-oils from PSS (43.78%) and WSS (32.33%) were higher than in the bio-oil from SSS.

Characterisation of 27 types of biomass was performed together with an assessment of regional resource availability. Charcoal was produced under two conditions from all samples and their yields were compared. Sugarcane bagasse, sal and pine produced the best charcoal with a low volatile matter and high calorific value. The amount of high-quality charcoal which can be made within Nepal from the biomass types tested is equivalent to 8,073,000 tonnes of firewood a year or 51% of the yearly demand. The areas which would benefit the most from charcoal making facilities are the Mid-hills of the Western, Central and Eastern Development Regions, as well as the Terai in the Central and Eastern Development Regions. The main potential benefit is to convert agricultural residues which are underutilised because, in their original form, produce large quantities of smoke, to cleaner burning charcoal. The conversion of agricultural residues to charcoal is also a viable alternative to anaerobic digestion in the Mid-hills.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of Alcell lignin with various additive ratios (5%, 10%, and 15%, mass ratio) of nano-NiO was investigated using a horizontal pyrolyzer. Characterization methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and elemental analysis, were utilized to identify the catalytic fast pyrolysis products. The results indicated that the nano-NiO catalyst had remarkable effects on the yield and quality of these products. The formation of gases, especially CO, CO2, and CH4, were greatly promoted when the additive ratio increased, while the formation of bio-char was clearly inhibited. However, when the additive ratio was 10%, the maximum yield of bio-oil (53.09 wt.%) was obtained, and the corresponding maximum higher heating value (HHV) was 25.33 MJ/kg. Furthermore, nano-NiO caused a large variation in the species of the compounds in bio-oil. Operating with the optimal nano-NiO additive ratio (10%), the carbon conversion rate was 65.50%, and the energy conversion rate was 74.53%.
