Prediction of specific depressive symptom clusters in youth with epilepsy: The NDDI‐E‐Y versus Neuro‐QOL SF

“…Treatment may include psychoeducation to children and family as well as cognitive‐behavioral therapy for children, and most child‐focused depression protocols include strong family involvement in treatment (eg, encouragement of mastery of skills). Notably, similar to adults, negative cognitions (ineffectiveness) may be more relevant than mood symptoms in youth with epilepsy, and interventions should target such symptoms . Those who have risk factors for depression (eg, family history of mood disorders, coexisting medical condition, psychosocial adversities) should be evaluated by clinicians at regular intervals for the prevention of clinical depression, early diagnosis, and treatment.…”

“…Using a 1-4 rating scale for each item on the NDDI-E-Y, 23.2% of our sample had NDDI-E-Y scores over 32, and similarly, 25% of our sample had Children's Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) T-scores of ≥65. 2,3 Both the NDDI-E-Y and the CDI-2 showed similar rates of clinically significant depressive symptoms. 3 Thus, we are confident in our results that we reported previously.…”

“…To The Editors: We read with interest the 2016 Epilepsia article by Wagner and colleagues validating the revised 12-item screening tool for depression in youth with epilepsy: the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory-Epilepsy for Youth (NDDI-E-Y), 1 and the 2017 Epilepsia article by the same team comparing NDDI-E-Y with the Neuro QOL-SF. 2 We commend the authors for this initiative, which is in line with the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) recommendations for routine screening for major depressive disorder (MDD) in epilepsy. 3 Appropriate screening tools are crucial given the symptomatic overlap with the effects of antiepileptic drugs; this diagnostic challenge led to the development of the NDDI-E for adults with epilepsy, 4 a 6-item questionnaire with robust psychometric properties across languages and populations.…”

“…The Children's Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) is considered the gold standard for pediatric depression screening. This 27-question tool requires a trained professional to administer and may be costly for some practices, typically costing between $1−$2 per administration (Kellermann et al, 2017;Wagner et al, 2016).…”
