“…The prediction is even more accurate when using these two variables together than when using either variable alone. Previous research has reached similar conclusions for claimed (Finez, 2008) or behavioral (Richards, Johnson, Collins, & Wood, 2002) self-handicapping. As Finez (2008) proposed, self-esteem level may enable researchers and practitioners to estimate athletes' motivation to protect and/or enhance their self, while claimed self-handicapping tendency may enable researchers and practitioners to estimate the extent to which athletes are likely to engage in claimed self-handicapping to do so.…”

“…Unfortunately, even if the examination performance was perceived relevant, participants had completed informed consent assuring them that any information pertaining to them would not be divulged. This could have undermined their motivation to protect their self-esteem (Richards, et al, 2002).…”

“…Military recruits with high trait self-handicapping and low global self-esteem were found to voluntarily withdraw from training more often than other recruits. Trait self-handicapping and self-esteem were able to correctly classify completers and dropouts with an overall accuracy of 82.9%, which represented a significant gain of 23.6% over chance (Richards, Johnson, Collins, & Wood, 2002). Fear of failure was positively related to trait self-handicapping in physical education (PE) students and indirectly related to their enjoyment of PE and their intentions to continue participating in optional PE in the future (Ntoumanis, Taylor, & Standage, 2010).…”
