“…Although PTMC is believed to be an indolent disease, the reported incidence of central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) associated with PTMC has been reported to be as high as 41.3% [8], and CLNM is known to be related to poor prognosis and locoregional recurrence [9]. However, prophylactic central lymph node dissection (CLND) has been reported to increase postoperative morbidity (transient hypocalcemia or recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis) [10, 11], and the use of total thyroidectomy (TT) plus CLND is thus debated for PTMC, because prophylactic CLND may have little prognostic benefit and increase postoperative morbidity [12].…”

“…In a study conducted in 1961, TC patients whose disease extended beyond the capsule of the thyroid gland to the regional lymph nodes, surrounding organs or tissues, etc., had a much higher survival rate than that of other groups at 20 years after surgery (21). On the contrary, recent study results suggest that the lymph node involvement have a bad effect on the prognosis of TC (22,23). Whereas in such a situation, there is still not much attention paid to the investigation on the survival outcomes of patients with different lymph node stages, especially for the NX stage.…”

“…Extrathyroidal extension (ETE) in thyroid cancer is also a well‐known risk factor for cervical LN metastasis in PTMC. Recent studies have reported that PTMC with ETE has an increased risk of LCLN metastasis . In this study, we focused only on the pre‐operative features of PTMCs and did not evaluate any potential association between ETE and the risk of LCLN metastasis.…”

“…Recent studies have reported that PTMC with ETE has an increased risk of LCLN metastasis. 14,24,27 In this study, we focused only on the pre-operative features of PTMCs and did not evaluate any potential association between ETE and the risk of LCLN metastasis. However, a subcapsular location, defined as thyroid nodules abutting on the thyroid capsule on US imaging, may be a pre-operative imaging biomarker indicative of ETE.…”
