Predictive Factors of Mortality After PEG Insertion

Abstract: Mortality predictors for patients after PEG insertion are higher age, lower BMI, and the presence of diabetes mellitus. To avoid unnecessary and dangerous examinations in high-risk patients, the above-mentioned predictive factors of mortality should be checked before PEG placement.

“…As various studies could show, short‐term (30 days) and long‐term (1 year) mortality among patients receiving a gastrostomy is generally high, ranging from 2.4–19.5% to 32.1–41.1%, respectively . Short‐term mortality in our cohort (6.1%) is in line with these findings.…”

“…Radiologically-inserted gastrostomy (RIG) was also introduced in 1981 and has been used as an alternative to PEG for enteral feeding with a high rate of technical success under local anesthesia 3. Although PEG and RIG are both considered minimally invasive, they are associated with considerable early mortality (30-day mortality), which has been reported as 5.8% to 28% for PEG and 1% to 40% for RIG 456789. Furthermore, various complications such as wound infections, hemorrhage, hematoma formation, aspiration pneumonia, or gastric perforation may develop after gastrostomy.…”

“…However, there are several cases with difficulty in gastrostomy for morphological reasons [2]. Moreover, PEG could be associated with several potential complications and postoperative death [1,2,3,4,5]. In order to perform PEG more safely and more quickly, we arranged preoperative examination.…”
