Predictive Maintenance of Boiler Feed Water Pumps Using SCADA Data

Abstract: IoT enabled predictive maintenance allows companies in the energy sector to identify potential problems in the production devices far before the failure occurs. In this paper, we propose a method for early detection of faults in boiler feed pumps using existing measurements currently captured by control devices. In the experimental part, we work on real measurement data and events from a coal fired power plant. The main research objective is to implement a model that detects deviations from the normal operatio… Show more

“…e.g., bearings are commonplace within rotary machinery and state-of-the-art algorithms have been applied to this area [45,49,55,67,91]. Another method of overcoming data reflecting a flexible operation is presented by Moleda et al [85]. Moleda et al [85] investigates a feedwater pump on a CHP in Poland.…”

“…Embedded sensors, software, controllers, connectivity, breakthroughs in networking, edge and fog computing, cloud technology, faster CPUs, cheaper memory, energy efficiency, and miniaturisation are all converging to create low-cost processing power and data storage everywhere and they became the key enabling technologies fuelling up the evolution in the paradigms [32][33][34]. As presented in Merluzzi and Brunetti [35] the "Reliability-Centered Maintenance" represents a systematic approach to evaluate a facility's equipment and resources to best mate the two and result in a high degree of facility reliability and costeffectiveness.…”

“…The use of mechanisms based on manual control, has shown in the operation of a boiler the lack of precision and with them the inefficient use of inputs (air and fuel) used in the production of steam [18]. Another important aspect of the manipulation of operators in the control of a boiler is the error in measurement of the operation indicators, since they express variation in what is needed and what it offers in terms of inputs [19].…”
