Predictive Validity of the Columbia‐Suicide Severity Rating Scale among a Cohort of At‐risk Veterans

Abstract: Objective To examine the psychometric properties of the Columbia‐ Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C‐SSRS) among a cohort of veterans identified to be at risk for suicide. Method Convergent, divergent, and predictive validity of the C‐SSRS were examined using secondary data from a study of veterans who presented to the psychiatric emergency room (n = 237). Data were collected 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months following emergency room discharge. Results Results demonstrated good evidence for convergent and … Show more

“…The C‐SSRS was designed to measure the severity of suicidal ideation and suicide behaviors. Findings supporting its validity and utility have been reported in a number of studies (Madan et al., ; Mundt et al., ; Na et al., ; Posner et al., ; Viguera et al., ; Youngstrom et al., ), including a recent study in VHA patients (Matarazzo et al., ).…”

“…For the purposes of the current study, the following measures from the C-SSRS were included in analyses: (a) presence or absence of any prior suicide attempt (including interrupted, aborted, and actual suicide attempts), (b) total frequency of prior suicide attempts; (c) presence or absence of any prior suicidal ideation, and (d) most severe prior suicidal ideation, rated on a scale of 1 ( passive wish to be dead ) to 5 ( active suicidal ideation with intent and plan ). Prior research suggests the C-SSRS demonstrates good concurrent and predictive validity in veteran samples (Katz, Barry, Cooper, Kasprow, & Hoff, 2020; Matarazzo et al, 2019).…”

“…The clinician-administered C-SSRS was examined in a sample of military veterans. Key findings suggested the ideation severity subscale was associated with lifetime STBs and preparatory behavior at baseline and 6-month follow-up (Mattarazzo et al, 2018). Moreover, the ideation severity subscale predicted an actual suicide attempt for veterans completing 6-month follow-up.…”
