Predictive value of craniofacial and anthropometric measures in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

Abstract: This preliminary study shows the utility of craniofacial and anthropometric variables in the identification of individuals at risk of OSA. These findings need to be further validated against the results of overnight polysomnography in a large independent population.

“…We obtained higher means of anthropometric measures in the Severe Apnea group comparing with the other three groups, reinforcing the anatomical contribution of obesity to the gravity form of Apnea as a risk marker for cardiovascular diseases, in particular the systemic arterial hypertension, shown in 47.5% of our patients and cited as the most prevalent morbidity among patients with the OSAS (Gonç alves, Thatiane, & Godoy, 2011;Remya et al, 2016;Theodorou et al, 2014). …”

“…Based on this threshold value, a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) algorithm was developed and trained using the 3D linear distances, geodesic distances, and angles of each face. The algorithm was then trained and tested to classify new unseen cases (see next paragraphs) using AHI threshold values of 10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45, and 50 events/h.…”
