Predictive value of ischaemia‐modified albumin in spermatogenesis in an experimental testicular torsion model

Abstract: Our aim was to measure the ability of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) to predict testicular histopathological damage in the testes of rats with short-and long-term ischaemia using experimental testicular torsion and subsequent reperfusion via detorsion.21 Wistar Albino rats were randomized into three groups. The sham group was subjected to a mid-scrotal incision only. The 4-and 8-hr T/D (Torsion/Detorsion) groups were subjected to left testicular torsion by twisting the testes by 720 degrees counterclockwise.… Show more

“…The increased mast cells in the walls of seminiferous tubules have attracted attention in patients suffering impaired spermatogenesis (6). Also, testicular torsion-detorsion is one of the causes of low sperm parameters due to ischemia/reperfusion injury and Johnsen scores are also lower in experimental models (13). Unfortunately, hyperactivity of mast cells due to inflammatory stimuli similarly can result in germinal cell necrosis and infertility.…”

“…The former usually occurs among pubertal males, especially with a “bell-clapper” deformity, while the latter occurs in the perinatal period during testicular descent into the scrotum [ 9 ]. It has impact on all age range, though with a greater occurrence in neonates, children, and juveniles [ 10 , 11 ]. The annual prevalence is about 4.5 in 100, 000 males; however, this varies across the globe [ 12 ].…”

“…Therefore, emergency surgical intervention is quite important in patients presenting with testicular torsion. Testicles of 90%‐100% of patients who undergo surgical procedures within the first 6 hr following the onset of symptoms are saved (Kutluhan et al., 2020). However, despite a successful surgical procedure, testicular atrophy is encountered in two‐thirds of the cases within 2 years (Power et al., 2003).…”

“…On the other hand, it leads to a large amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by acting as oxygen oxidants that are densely present in the environment with the restoration of blood flow. This condition is called ischaemia‐reperfusion injury, and it paradoxically causes extremely severe damage compared to ischaemic conditions (Kutluhan et al., 2020; Power et al., 2003). However, an inflammatory response characterised by neutrophil activation also occurs in ischaemia‐reperfusion damage.…”
