Predictive value of serum adiponectin and hemoglobin levels for vascular cognitive impairment in ischemic stroke patients

Abstract: Objectives: To investigate the potential predictive value of serum adiponectin (APN) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels for the occurrence of vascular cognitive impairment in ischemic stroke patients. Methods: Eighty ischemic stroke patients, admitted to our hospital between June 2019 and November 2020, were retrospectively divided into no cognitive impairment (NCI) group (n=43) and cognitive impairment (CI) group (n=37) based on Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale scoring at three months follow-up. “…The proteins ARTN, HGF ( Gallo et al, 2015 ), and VEGF ( Lee et al, 2010 ) are associated with angiogenesis and neuroprotection, and their early predictive role in PSCI patients was identified ( Prodjohardjono et al, 2020 ; Hazelwood et al, 2022 ). Both neuroglobin and hemoglobin, which are subtypes of pearl proteins ( Lopez et al, 2010 ; Baez et al, 2016 ), play an important role in oxidative stress and protect brain tissue from hypoxic and ischemic damage, so their reduced levels increase the risk of developing PSCI ( Gao et al, 2022 ; Li Z. et al, 2022 ).…”

“…As a main carrier of oxygen, hemoglobin level decreasing may result in oxygen deficiency in the body and lead to the hypoxic and ischemic injury of tissues and organs 3 . Previous researches have explored the relationships between hemoglobin and clinical outcomes in many disorders including cancer 4 , diabetes 5 , stroke 6 and trauma 7 .…”

“…Stroke survivors are prone to cognitive impairment and at high risk of dementia; however, the exact cause remains unknown. 2 Without any specific remedy or treatment protocol, it is of great importance to prevent the occurrence of cognitive impairment or dementia and treat the affected group with combination therapy. 3 Oxiracetam (OXR) represents an emerging kind of nootropics with claimed benefits to improve dysmnesia, repair damaged nerve cells, protect brain tissue from hypoxia, and enhance learning, while its efficacy requires corroboration.…”
