Predictors of assistive technology use: The importance of personal and psychosocial factors

Abstract: The ATD PA is a valid measure of predisposition to use an AT and the subsequent match of AT and user. Rehabilitation practitioners who use the ATD PA will achieve evidence-based practice and can expect to see enhanced AT service delivery outcomes.

“…The Matching Person and Technology Model [11] identifies the importance of considering not only what technology can do but the environment in which it will be used and the personality of the user when assessing for assistive technology. Failure to consider factors such as service provision have been documented as significant in the adoption or failure to adopt AT [12], [13]. Studies have also highlighted the lack of user involvement in the design of assistive devices [14].…”

“…62 For example, the item response theory which comprised of the mathematical tools and statistical methods can analyze items and scales, create and manage health outcome measures, and assess selfreported health outcomes. 63 Similarly, the matching person and technology 64,65 can also be used as an assessment procedure to determine the appropriate AT for a particular user in the given environment. The qualitative and quantitative assessment based on 13 technological criteria has also been used to assess AT solutions.…”

“…Studies show that the use of ADs has a positive impact on activity and participation [2,20]. Studies applying a longitudinal perspective often show an increased use in older age [2,12]. However, different study designs, variation in sampling, differences in how the use of ADs is measured in relation to functional capacity or to ADL, and the kinds of or number of ADs used, make it difficult to compare and generalise results.…”

“…Research on ADs focuses, to a great extent, on the use of ADs according to individuals with specific diagnoses and the outcome of the use of ADs. From prior research, it is also known that the use of ADs increases with age [12][13][14][15] and that women use a higher number of ADs than men [16]. Moreover, ADs for mobility have shown to have a positive impact on daily life and a positive influence on the users' mobility, sense of independence, self-esteem and security [17][18][19].…”
