Predictors of deep-vein thrombosis for acute stroke at admission to a rehabilitation unit: A retrospective study

Abstract: BackgroundDeep-vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common complication of acute stroke (AS). Only limited studies have discussed DVT in patients with AS at admission to a rehabilitation unit. The purpose of this study is to identify the predictors of DVT in AS patients admitted to a rehabilitation unit in China.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients with AS admitted within 14 days of stroke onset between July 2019 and June 2022 at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Xuanwu Hospita… Show more

“…As described above, our study revealed that aging, female sex, lower limb paralysis, and higher plasma D-dimer levels were associated with the development of DVT, which is consistent with previous research findings ( 5 8 ). In the specific cohort of stroke patients with occlusion in a large cerebral artery and receiving thrombectomy, we identified the operative time of EVT as another independent risk factor for DVT.…”

“…On the basis of ultrasound findings, DVT was detected in 67 of 245 cases (27.3%), all of whom had undergone right femoral artery puncture during EVT. The prevalence was higher than the overall prevalence previously observed in patients with acute stroke (including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke) (5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). Most patients were asymptomatic, and only three of them developed swelling of the lower extremities.…”

“…This heightened risk may be attributable to alcohol’s indirect influence on the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems, disrupting the delicate balance necessary for normal blood clotting and dissolution(28). The nuanced effects of different treatments on VTE risk during the acute phase of AIS patients have been somewhat overlooked in previous research(29). Nonetheless, our analysis reveals that patients undergoing EVT may face a greater VTE risk compared to those receiving thrombolytic therapy or symptomatic care alone.…”

“…While the incidence of stroke is decreasing in high-income countries, it is increasing significantly in low-and middle-income countries (to which Kyrgyzstan belongs) (6). In Russia, for example according data of Republic of Bashkortostan, since 2016 till 2018 the incidence of strokes has gradually decreased up to 348.2 cases per 100 thousand adults (7).…”
