This chapter provides an overview of counseling strategies for individuals who have the stigmatized identity of living with a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and/or Mental Illness (MI). Psychiatric rehabilitation, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented approaches are discussed in depth. Assessment strategies including SUD screening, screening for trauma, assessing for symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and identifying recovery from SUD/MI are provided. Motivational Interviewing techniques are described as they relate to counseling individuals with SUD/MI. The peer-led strategies of support groups and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) classes are explained. Additional clinical strategies of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) and Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) case management models, the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment model, and emerging trauma-informed approaches are offered. A case scenario has been provided to facilitate discussion of the application of the information provided in this chapter with a client who needs recovery.
