Predictors of Hazardous Alcohol Consumption among Patients with Cluster Headache

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of hazardous alcohol consumption in patients with cluster headache (CH). We investigated 246 German CH patients with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). The average daily alcohol consumption was 6.5 g. Predictors for hazardous drinking (AUDIT>or=5 points; 21.5% of patients) were male gender [odds ratio (OR) 4.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.35, 12.71], episodic as opposed to chronic CH (OR 4.8, 95% CI 1.38, 16.67) and a low demanding jo… Show more

“…ALDH2-deficient individuals are more sensitive to alcohol flushing responses [18] and hangover [5, 6], in both of which headache is a major symptom. Intake of alcoholic beverages has been reported to be an aggravating factor of headache [4], especially migraine [19] and cluster headache [20]. Individuals with migraine have a higher risk of delayed alcohol-induced headache than those without it [21].…”

“…Episodic CH was diagnosed in 184 patients, chronic CH in 41 patients, and 21 were diagnosed after their first bout (periodicity undetermined). Detailed characteristics on the patients are described elsewhere 9,11 . Written consent was obtained from all patients, and the local ethics committee of the University of Essen approved this study.…”

“…Headache is a major symptom of flushing responses [9] and hangovers [11]. Consumption of alcoholic beverages has been reported to be a factor that aggravates migraine [1214] and cluster headaches [15]. Individuals with migraine are at higher risk of delayed alcohol-induced headache, previously named hangover headache, than people without migraine and phenotypically both types of headache have similar clinical features [16].…”
