Predictors of Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Initiation and Completion Among Latino Mothers of 11- to 17-Year-Old Daughters Living Along the Texas-Mexico Border

Abstract: Few Texas Latino girls initiate and complete the HPV vaccine series, but few studies have examined predictors of initiation and completion in this group. Mothers are crucial to vaccine uptake. Using self-reported data from mothers of unvaccinated girls (n=317), we examined the association between predictors (HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge, vaccine self-efficacy) and outcomes (initiation and completion). Despite an increase in HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge from baseline to follow-up (n=195), we found no associat… Show more

“…Previous studies have also demonstrated income as a predictor of HPV vaccination, 20 and studies on the effects of social determinants of health on HPV vaccination found that higher vaccination uptake correlated with low worry about vaccine cost and having health insurance. 21,22 Our finding on education level as another predictor of vaccination status may reflect the fact that lower level of education is often a root cause of lower income.…”

“…Table 1 lists the study characteristics and mean uptake of HPV vaccines. Most studies were cross-sectional in design, with seven longitudinal studies, 26 33 40 48 52 72 98 one retrospective cohort study, 29 one case–control study, 32 one quasi-experimental (single-group, pre-post design) study, 39 one clustered, non-randomised controlled pragmatic trial 62 and one cluster randomised trial. 45 Sample sizes ranged from 43 45 to 254 489 99 (median (M)=617.0), with 88.6% (n=70) ranging from 43 45 to 8652 50 (M=519.5) and 11.4% (n=9) ranging from 15 049 34 to 254 489 99 (M=65 926).…”

“…Such information would provide a complete picture of the HPV vaccine decisions made by Latinx families (Suárez et al, 2019). Finally, we did not collect data on mothers’ cancer screening history, which has been associated with HPV vaccination among daughters and sons (Morales-Campos & Parra-Medina, 2017). Future research can build on our findings with other research designs and address these limitations by quantifying Latinx mothers’ awareness, knowledge, and acceptability of the HPV vaccine for their sons, as well as exploring and quantifying Latinx fathers’ awareness, knowledge, and acceptability of the HPV vaccine for their sons and daughters.…”
