Predictors of Initial AA-Related Helping: Findings From Project MATCH

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Objective: The purpose of this article is to identify the factors that predict initial Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)-related helping following treatment admission. Method: Data were derived from Project MATCH (Matching Alcoholism Treatments to Client Heterogeneity), a longitudinal investigation of the effi cacy of three behavioral treatments for alcohol abuse and dependence. Cox proportional hazard regressions were performed to determine the extent to which demographic, clinical, belief, and AA factors p… Show more

“…The higher quality studies are even more likely to report this finding. Of the 145 studies that were rated 7 or higher in quality, 90% (i.e., 131 studies) found inverse relationships [21][22][23]; only one study reported a positive relationship [24]. The results from studies examining R/S and drug use parallel those on R/S and alcohol.…”

“…Bentler's comparative fi t index (Bentler, 1990) and the Bentler-Bonett nonnormed fi t index (Bentler and Bonett, 1980) were above the recommended level of .90, with values close to .95 (Allison, 2005;Byrne, 2001). Background characteristics signifi cantly associated with either 12-step involvement or treatment outcomes-including age, race, readiness for change, felony history, treatment history, parental marital status, and parental education (Pagano et al, 2009b)-were controlled for in all analytic models. Variables were mean centered to reduce multicollinearity (Aiken and West, 1991).…”

“…By making these minor changes of removing two seemingly insignificant variables, the Bayesian network model suggested the second strongest variable dependency relationship seen throughout our data analysis: a relationship between the modified CAS score and the service with others variable. Service with others was identified in our literature review to be one of the strongest behavioral elements associated with long-term sobriety (Cloud, Ziegler, & Blondell, 2004;Miller, 1998;Montgomery et al, 1995;Pagano et al, 2009;Pagano et al, 2010;Tonigan, Connors, & Miller, 1996). This one variable, not coincidentally, is the central focus of the 12th…”

“…Some studies have identified factors within the individual's locus of control, whereas others demonstrate the importance of environmental factors (Longabaugh et al, 1994;Pagano, Zemore, Onder, & Stout, 2009). For instance, involvement in treatment or aftercare self-help groups has been found to contribute to a more favorable outcome.…”
