Predictors of Intentions to Eat Healthily in 8–9-Year-Old Children

Abstract: One thousand two hundred seventy-two French children aged 8-9 years old participated in a study aimed at identifying predictors of healthy eating intention. We used a survey based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Regression analyses were performed to assess the extent to which the extended TPB variables explained intention to eat healthily. “…According to TPB, behavior is determined by BI, which is affected by attitude, subjective norm, and PBC. 25 This result showed that parents' restrictive controlling might have a significant effect on children's behavior related to sweet food consumption. Previous studies reported the results of parents' role in children's dietary behavior.…”

“…The most consistent nutrition behavior outcome assessed was "healthy eating;" Bazillier et al, 2011 Grønhøj et al, 2013) however, definitions of this behavior differed between studies. Sugary snack and drink consumption (Åstrøm, 2004;Åstrøm & Okullo, 2004; and sugary beverage/soft drink intake Tak et al, 2011) accounted for nine publications.…”

“…The remaining studies reported using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) de Bruijn et al, 2005;de Bruijn et al, 2007;Lien et al, 2002;Tak et al, 2011;. In 13 studies it was unclear or not specified which type of which dietary evaluation tool was administered; (Åstrøm, 2004;Åstrøm & Okullo, 2004;Bazillier et al, 2011;Fila & Smith, 2006;Hewitt & Stephens, 2007;Mullan et al, 2013;Seo et al, 2011;Sharifirad et al, 2013) however, it can be inferred that a food screener or FFQ was used in six of these (Hewitt & Stephens, 2007;Mullan et al, 2013;Sharifirad et al, 2013). Studies evaluating the intention of a specified nutrition behavior (e.g.…”
