Predictors of Male Circumcision Among Men Aged 15–35 Years in Harare, Zimbabwe

Abstract: Medical male circumcision has been recommended by the World Health Organization as part of a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention. Zimbabwe is one of the fourteen sub-Saharan countries that embarked on the Medical Male Circumcision (MMC) programme. However, the country has not yet met male circumcision targets. This paper examines the predictors of male circumcision in Zimbabwe. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 784 men aged 15-35 years in Harare, Zimbabwe. Negative log-log logistic regression anal… Show more

“…However, there are some inconsistencies in the results. For instance, older age6 44 and younger age,12 45 and being employed46 or unemployed44 have been associated with increased VMMC uptake. Sociodemographic factors that have consistently predicted VMMC uptake include higher education (secondary school and above),10 12 46 belief of improved sexual performance10 12 47 and having two or more sexual partners or high self-perceived risk of HIV 12 14 45.…”

“…Mozambique continues to face a generalized HIV epidemic, with an estimated prevalence of 10.1% among men 15-49 years in 2015 and 9.0% in 2021 [10,13]. Despite HIV prevention interventions over the past three decades, HIV and AIDS remain a significant public health challenge in Mozambique [4,11,[13][14][15].…”

“…Several randomized trials in Africa have provided evidence that MMC reduces the risk of female-to-male transmission of HIV by 60% [3]. Moreover, recent meta-analyses support the protective benefits of MMC in preventing HIV infection [4,5]. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) recommend that countries with generalized epidemics with low circumcision rates in the population introduce a strategy of providing MMC to uncircumcised men [9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…The dependent variable for this study was dichotomised; hence, a binary regression model (negative log-log) was used to analyse the factors associated under-five mortality. When the probability of a case is very low or very big, negative log-log models are frequently used (Mangombe andKalule-Sabiti 2018, McCullagh 1980). The adverse log-log feature is asymmetrical, unlike logit and probit models.…”
