Predictors of Maternal Grief in the Year after a Newborn Death

Abstract: Existing interventions to assist mothers following newborn death are implemented once manifestations of distress are present. Preventive measures could be instituted if predictors of grief were defined. The objective of this study was to investigate the value of perceived support, relationship satisfaction, emotionfocused coping, problem-focused coping, and mixed coping in predicting maternal grief in the year after a newborn death. The sample consisted of seventy-five bereaved mothers. Measures used included

“…However, in general, positive interpersonal relationships and strong social support are two types of interventions which are negatively correlated with grief intensity. 27 This suggests that, while not the sole variable influencing psychological outcomes for grieving mothers and fathers, psychosocial care and support can reduce the risk of negative affect. Lavender and Walkinshaw conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) on women who had experienced traumatic birth and found that supportive counseling, understanding, and explanation e as a formal intervention e provided psychological benefit to women.…”

“…Predictors of poor coping with perinatal grief in Western societies have included emotion-focused coping strategies, maladaptive coping skills, perceived lack of social support, and intense emotionality at the time of stillbirth (Bennett, Litz, Maguen, & Ehrenreich, 2008;Cacciatore, Schnebly, & Froen, 2009;Engler & Lasker, 2000). The dearth of data pertaining to Indian women's perinatal grief limits our understanding of factors that predict their coping with the loss.…”

“…A conceptual model was theoretically developed; structural equation modeling (SEM) was then used to explore the model fitness. We hypothesized that (a) women with lower autonomy would have higher perinatal grief scores due to a lack freedom to exercise any practical coping, thereby relying heavily on emotion focused coping which is associated with increased perinatal grief (Engler & Lasker, 2000), and that (b) women with traditional views toward social norms would have greater perinatal grief due to inhibited expression of grief proscribed by social expectations and the stigma and blame attached to stillbirth (Sather et al, 2010;Stanton, Lawn, Rahman, Wilczynska-Ketende, & Hill, 2006). Additionally, the internationally validated Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS) was expected to perform reliably in our study population.…”

“…Die Trauerbelastung nach perinatalem Verlust ist umso intensiver und / oder langwieriger, je weniger soziale Unterstützung (Verwandte, Freunde, Bekannte etc.) die Eltern tatsächlich oder vermeintlich erfahren und je weniger stabil und zufrieden stellend die elterliche Partnerschaftsbeziehung ist [11,18,20].…”
