Predictors of physical activity and barriers to exercise in nursing and medical students

Abstract: Physical activity should be promoted in nursing and medicine students. Interventions should aim to build self-efficacy for exercise and increase social support. Interventions should be developed that are targeted specifically to shift-working frontline care staff, to reduce schedule-related barriers to exercise and to increase accessibility to workplace health and well-being initiatives.

“…In the second level of predictive findings, barriers for the practice of physical exercise, the highest weight is for fatigue o laziness, followed by body image/physical-social anxiety and obligations or lack of time. These results are similar to those reported in previous studies finding environmental and psychological barriers, knowledge, lack of medical support and energy or age (Blake, Stanulewicz, & McGill, 2017;Casper, Bocarro, Kanters, & Floyd, 2011;Maxwell-Smith, Zeps, Hagger, Platell, & Hardcastle, 2017). Likewise, the study by Boutevillain, Dupeyron, Rouch, Richard & Coudeyre (2017) also supports these results, emphasizing that group practice increases people's adherence to the practice of physical exercise.…”

“…Self-efficacy is an individual's belief in his or her ability to perform a specific action required to attain a desired outcome. Self-efficacy is also reported to relate with physical activity (Luszczynska and Haynes, 2009;Blake et al, 2017;Hamilton et al, 2017). In addition, social support is reported on the association with physical activity.…”

“…Furthermore, women who perceived more benefits from exercise and fewer barriers to exercise were more active than those who reported high perceived barriers and low perceived benefits (Vaughn, 2009). However, many people are inactive despite the benefits of physical activity (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1996;Kohl et al, 2000;Blake et al, 2017). These factors have been investigated with regard to whether they were related with currently doing physical activity.…”
