Predictors of physical activity levels of individuals following traumatic brain injury remain unclear: A systematic review

Abstract: The results of this systematic review demonstrated that little is known about PALs of individuals with TBI. PALs of participants with TBI were less than required for health maintenance. Self-efficacy to exercise and motivation were the most frequently identified facilitators of PA in the TBI population.

“…The fact that the animals in this study voluntarily resumed activity soon after TBI, and showed better performance on outcome measures, suggests that it was not harmful. Interestingly, a recent review of clinical studies of exercise and TBI identified that levels of activity were lower than that required for optimum health and were influenced by factors such as self‐efficacy to exercise and motivation (Hamilton et al ., ). It was further suggested by the Hamilton et al .…”

“…It was further suggested by the Hamilton et al . () paper that identifying barriers to exercise will be important to improving long‐term outcomes after TBI. In comparison while our study showed a benefit of early exercise, others have shown bimodal time‐dependent effects of exercise that are exacerbated by stress, and are linked to autonomic regulation and HPS axis function (Griesbach et al ., , ).…”

“…Both environmental factors and individual factors have been reported as barriers to physical activity for individuals following moderate to severe TBI [22,23]. Environmental barriers include lack of transportation and lack of accessible facilities to complete physical activity, whereas individual barriers include decreased endurance, self-consciousness in fitness centers, and lack of time [22].…”
