“…Earlier clinical trials and more recent observational studies of PrEP users reported high STI incidence among participants. [39][40][41][42] Those findings suggest that PrEP is reaching the intended high-risk MSM population. However, it is difficult to extrapolate whether those elevated STI rates were a result of risk compensation following PrEP initiation or from increased detection due to more frequent screening.…”

“…Early data suggest these non-condombased interventions are associated with reduced condom use and possibly an increase in the number of sexual partners, both of which will increase the reproductive rate of HPV infection and hence the proportion of the population that will need to be vaccinated. 19 Unfortunately, the prospect of widespread and dramatic reductions in HPV incidence and HPV-associated cancers in MSM seem unlikely, with only five countries having adopted universal vaccination of boys before sexual activity. Some countries have adopted programs targeted at sexually active MSM, but with rapid acquisition of infection and reduced vaccine efficacy, it is unlikely that dramatic HPV reductions will occur outside those directly vaccinated.…”

“…MSM on PrEP, received a diagnostic HIV test at regular intervals (3 months). MSM who started PrEP were assigned a fixed adherence profile that reflected an average weekly dosage using data from the U.S. PrEP Demo Project [27] weighted by race/ethnicity using methods from Jenness et al 2016 [17], which investigated the impact of the implementation of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's PrEP guidelines on the national HIV epidemic among MSM. For Atlanta, we assigned 21.1% of men as nonadherent (0 doses), 7.0% as taking fewer than 2 doses per week, 10.0% taking 2-3 doses per week, and 61.9% taking ≥4 doses per week; for Seattle, we assigned 14.4% as non-adherent, 4.1% taking <2 doses per week, 5.3% 2-3 doses per week, and 76.2% ≥4 doses per week [17].…”

“…The probability of HIV acquisition per sex act was reduced according to the level of adherence. There was little evidence for risk behavior changes among MSM while on PrEP in studies predating the development of this model [27][28][29][30], so we focused on PrEP coverage and adherence and did not model such behavior changes. In order to investigate the possible impacts of HIV self-testing strategies on HIV epidemic dynamics in future models, we added more complex parameters describing clinic-based HIV testing behaviors to the original model to create a new baseline model.…”
