This research aimed to critically review literature on the development of Zakah research from 2003 through 2019. This research employed a descriptive method and a qualitative approach. Classification is to be made into 8 categories of research, namely management, poverty, Zakah payment, organizational performance, collection and distribution, tax and Zakah, development and measurement of Zakah, and others. This research found that the topic garnering the most interest was poverty. This is because Zakah would reduce the poverty rate of a country.

This study aims to determine the factors influencing Millennials and Gen Z's intention to pay zakat in formal zakat institutions. The Theory of Planned Behavior is used as the theoretical framework in this study by including variables of education, income, perceived religiosity, literacy, social influence, and credibility of zakat institutions. Primary data was collected through a survey of a total of 100 Millennial and Gen Z Muslim respondents in the Jabodetabek area who pay zakat through a formal zakat institution. The analysis in this study uses a logistic regression model. This study found that the level of education and the credibility of zakat institutions have a positive and significant effect on the intention or willingness of millennials and Gen Z to pay zakat through formal zakat institutions. However, the variables of income, perceived religiosity, literacy, and social influence are insignificant in this study. The implications of these findings include that BAZNAS and zakat institutions need to implement programs to increase public knowledge and develop promotional strategies for paying zakat through zakat institutions. In terms of credibility, BAZNAS must be able to formulate clear regulations to guide zakat institutions in administering zakat professionally and credibly. In addition, managers of zakat institutions must also ensure they can manage institutions professionally and credibly implement digitization (online platform) to facilitate and accelerate muzaki access to pay zakat and get information on zakat distribution. Some limitations of this research that can still be developed in other studies are the use of a larger number of samples and the coverage of other cities in Indonesia.

Individual motivation to pay ZIS through the amil (collector and distributor) zakat institution is influenced by the level of religiosity (Abdullah & Sapiei, 2018;Farah et al, 2019;Ma'fiyah, Yughi & Awaludin, 2018). The study of zakat and taxes is still a highly regarded topic, especially in relation to the public’s perception of zakat as a tax reduction. The aim of this study is to examine the influencing factors towards the perception of Muslims on the zakat policy as a form of tax reduction based on an adopted research model. To assess the quality of the models and hypothesis, the Partial Least Square (PLS) - Structure Equations Model (SEM) is used in this study. There is a total of 152 respondents involved in this study whereby the respondents are almost evenly divided between Malaysians and Indonesians. The Malaysian citizens are a total of 77 people (50.7%) and the remaining 75 people (49.3%) are Indonesian residents. Based on the SEM results of the formation factors in the test produced by the method of Exploratory Factor Analysis, it can be said that only the knowledge about tax, religiosity and satisfaction variables have a significant and positive influence or impact on the perception towards tax through zakat system. The results of this study can reduce the gap in perception and understanding among the Muslim community regarding the perception of Muslims towards tax breaks through the zakat system and will surely play an important role for countries, policy makers and zakat or tax institutions both in Malaysia and Indonesia as well as around the world in utilizing practices which can be considered highly and positively beneficial to the Muslim society.
