Preferential flow descriptions for structured soils

Abstract: In heterogeneous structured soils, water and transported dissolved substances and suspended particles and colloids may under certain conditions bypass most of the soil porous matrix thereby creating nonequilibrium conditions in pressure heads and solute concentrations between preferential flow paths and the soil matrix pore region. Preferential flow severely limits the applicability of standard models for flow and transport that are mostly based on Richards' equation and the convection‐dispersion equation. A n… Show more

“…The PF model concepts are only briefly explained here. For details, the reader is referred to recent review articles by Šimůnek et al (2003), Gerke (2006), Jarvis (2007), and Šimůnek and van Genuchten (2008). Here, the emphasis is on the applications of such models in describing experimental observations.…”

“…Presence of fissures creates so called "dual permeability" systems that consider the porous medium as two interacting and overlapping, but distinct continuum with water flow occurring in both continua (Gwo et al, 1995;Greco et al, 2002;Simůnek et al, 2003;Gerke, 2006;Jarvis, 2007). Fissures influence the time and intensity of groundwater recharge changing the storage capacity of a soil and affect the infiltration processes of rainfall or snowmelt (Bogaard, 2001;Van Asch et al, 2001;Bievre et al, 2011).…”

“…Krzeminska et al (2012) included more detailed representation of fissure flow in STARWARS model. Following a dual-permeability approach (Gerke, 2006;Šimůnek et al, 2003;Jarvis, 2007) they assumed the presence of two overlapping and interacting domains, the matrix and fissures blocks, having their own characteristic and properties (i.e., porosity, hydraulic conductivity) and allowing water flow in both domains.…”

“…Dual permeability theory (Gwo et al, 1995;Greco et al, 2002;Šimůnek et al, 2003;Gerke, 2006;Jarvis, 2007) considers the porous medium as two (or more) interacting and overlapping but yet distinct continua. The water flow occurs in both continua but it is mainly ruled by the fracture continuum (macropore or fissure), which generates preferential flow.…”
