Pregnancies in Perinatally HIV-Infected Young Women and Implications for Care and Service Programs

Abstract: A cohort of individuals with perinatally acquired HIV is maturing into reproductive age. This study describes pregnancy incidence and outcomes among females ages 15-25 with perinatally acquired HIV infection receiving comprehensive family-centered services in New York City. Chart reviews from 1998-2006 indicated 33 pregnancies among 96 young women. [ 11 ] The effects of chronic HIV infection and the long-term exposure to ART of PHIV women cause concerns on the developing fetus. [ 12 , 13 ] Moreover, little is known about the risk of HIV-MTCT in PHIV women and the specific clinical management of this population.…”

“…In 32 live births from a cohort of pregnant PHIV adolescents enrolled in the Pediatrics AIDS Clinical Trials protocol 219, the rate of vertical transmission of HIV infection was calculated to be 3.3 percent [44]. Other study sites reported comparable low rates of vertical transmission of HIV: no cases of vertical transmission of HIV in 19 infants in New York and 6 infants in Puerto Rico [45,46].…”
