Pregnancy and pityriasis rosea: Current concepts

Abstract

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute self-limiting dermatosis with erythematous and squamous. Lesions of the trunk and limbs, mostly associated with endogenous reactivation of human herpesvirus (HHV)-6 and HHV-7. 1 PR is a relatively common disorder especially among females and those between 10 to 35 years old. 2 Hence, it is not surprising that, it is more frequent in pregnant women than the general population (18% vs. 6%). 2 Moreover, an altered immunity state during pregnancy might play a role in viral reactivation. 3 Some previous studies expressed concerns about association of PR in pregnancy with some complications including higher rates of spontaneous abortions, premature delivery, stillbirth, low birth weight, hydramnios, and congenital malformations such as foramen ovale and craniosynostosis. 2,4
