“…In case reports and small series of up to 11 pregnancies (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21) looking at the outcome of pregnancy in asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic women after an intra-atrial baffle repair, the authors have described symptomatic heart failure requiring therapy during pregnancy (13,14,16,17,19 -21), deterioration in RV systolic function (13,14,16,19,20), development of supraventricular arrhythmias (13,14,18,21), stroke (21), and death (20,21). These results, like our data, confirm that pregnancy after a Mustard operation can be successful but carries a risk of deterioration in functional class, even in women who are asymptomatic before pregnancy.…”

“…Data relating to the outcome of pregnancy in these women are limited to several medium-sized case series, [15][16][17][18][19] a number of smaller series and case reports. [20][21][22][23][24][25] All are retrospective. Due to the rarity of the condition, there are no single-centre series; all are either multi-centre or based on retrospective analyses of National Registries.…”

“…In 1910, Lewis published a landmark treatise on AF and established the term auricular fibrillation, which he defined as "a condition in which normal impulse formation in the auricle is replaced by stimulus production at multiple auricular foci. Co-ordinate contraction is lost; the normal and regular impulses transmitted to the ventricle are absent, while rapid and haphazard impulses produced in the auricle take their place and produces gross irregularity of the ventricular action" (140).…”
