Preliminary assessment of cadmium mobility in surface sediments of a tropical estuary

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Cadmium is a toxic metal often found with a strong enrichment factor in coastal sediments. The sequential extraction procedure proposed by the BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) was applied for partitioning of Cd in tropical estuary sediments. The method showed satisfactory recoveries. The repartition of Cd in different phases of sediment was controlled by the residual phase (50.32 to 67.45 %). However, the exchangeable and acid soluble fraction (F1) was in general found to be the second most abunda… Show more

“…It was 37.5% of pseudo-total content (Figure 1) at the range from 12.4 to 62.4%. As stated by Kouassi et al [2014], under neutral or slightly acidic conditions, the metals in this fraction can be leached very easily. It means that the Cd contained in fresh MSWI bottom ash poses a major environmental and human health problem, despite its lowest pseudo-total content among the studied metals.…”

“…Il apparaît donc très important d'approfondir nos connaissances sur le rôle de la matière organique dans l'accumulation des métaux dans les sédiments. Kouassi et al (2014), ont établi la distribution du cadmium dans les différentes phases des sédiments de la lagune Ebrié. Il a été révélé que la fraction de cadmium susceptible de se retrouver dans la colonne était largement supérieure à la moyenne de la croûte continentale terrestre.…”

“…Speciation indicates to the occurrence of a metal in a variant of chemical form. These forms may include free metal ions, metal complexes dissolved in solution and sorbed on solid surface, and metal species that have been co-precipitated in major metal solids or that occur in their own solid [10]. The speciation studies of metals in sediments not only conduct an showing of the current quality of the overlaying water but also provide important information on the transportation and fate of pollutants [5], [7], [14], [15].…”
