Preliminary Characterization of Dog Derived Pathogenic Strains of Leptospira interrogans Serovar Australis in Nanchang of Jiangxi Province, China

Abstract: Leptospirosis is a global zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira, and those infected animals will show a variety of clinical symptoms and even death. The discovery of endemic strains is crucial to produce effective vaccines. In this study, we report that a strain of Leptospira, isolated from a dog, is pathogenic. Using MLST analysis, the serovar of isolated Leptospira was identified and found it belongs to Leptospira interrogation Serovar Australis. Then, the virulence of this strain was researched b… Show more

“…There are only a few epidemiological reports of canine leptospirosis in China, most based on surveys of cities in the south [ 22 , 23 ], which is consistent with the fact that leptospirosis occurs mainly in warm and humid parts of the south [ 24 , 25 ]. Changchun is located in the subtropical region of China.…”

“…In our study, the other three serogroups, L. Australis, L. Ballum and L. Pyrogenes, accounted for more than half of the positive samples and should be concerned. Although pathogenic L. Pomona and L. Pyrogenes have not been reported in China, our team successfully isolated the L. Australis strain of Leptospirosis from an infected dog in 2020 [24]. These three types of Leptospira are likely to become potential pathogens and threaten dogs' health.…”

“…Nonetheless, Leptospira spp. are important zoonotic pathogens with approximately 500,000 globally reported cases annually, with high lethality depending on species, strain, and case severity (Esson et al., 2019; Song et al., 2021). Exposure to Leptospira has been demonstrated in humans with unexplained sepsis in Cambodia and in people with undifferentiated febrile illness in Northern Thailand (Rozo et al., 2020; Takhampunya et al., 2019).…”

“…The disease is caused by pathogenic spirochetes in the genus Leptospira , which currently contains 68 species, in which pathogenic groups can be divided into over 24 pathogenic serogroups and 250 pathogenic serovars based on the surface epitopes of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens on their outer membrane [ 2 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. As various pathogenic serovars can infect humans and animals, it is crucial to identify the serovar involved and develop improved serological diagnostic techniques to understand their epidemiology and prevent the spread of disease [ 5 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”
