Preliminary Design of a Low-Cost Mobile Test Cell for Small Gas Turbine Engines

Abstract: This paper describes the design considerations and calculations of a mobile low-cost test cell for small gas turbine engines (GTE). The test bed was designed for the TS-20 jet engine, originated in a gas turbine starter and should be used mostly for educational purposes and for experimental validation of analytical computations. Limitations of the project were the engine air mass flow rate, low noise emissions for possibility of performance close to urban area, low cost and good mobility of the test cell. The … Show more

“…For that reason, to achieve higher mathematical model accuracy, it is necessary to change gain K depending on Q pal change in real time. It may vary as in aircraft models by switch of models for various operating point, or as we propose for aircraft engines we will change them by gain approximation K i, j , (K 0, j ) regarding the work of Pečinka and Jílek (2012).…”

“…The pre-start diagnostic system is using an expert system and an inference network to check different sensors and parameters after start-up sequence is initiated and allows the engine in further starting. Online diagnostic system is based on the idea of quorum elements with pair comparison using real-world sensor data and synthetic virtual models [9]. The virtual models compute different state parameters of the engine and are mainly based on neural networks.…”

“…Using a digitally-controlled actuator to meter fuel flow into the engine together with digitally-controlled auxiliary systems allows us to build a flexible control and diagnostic system utilizing the concept of a wireless sensor network in the future [14]. All elements can be controlled and turned on or off independently, tied only by algorithmic software links.…”

“…As a testing parameter for the implementation of the presented diagnostic/backup approach, the parameter of speed has therefore been chosen. Contrary to other diagnostic systems, the presented system acts as a diagnostic but also backup system at the same time [13,14,15]. The primary way of obtaining of the engine's speed is the optical sensor [10,11] The structure of the diagnostic/backup module is shown in Figure 5.…”
