Preliminary Epidemiologic Assessment of Human Infections With Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N6) Virus, China

Abstract: Similar epidemiologic characteristics and high severity were observed in cases of H5N6 and H5N1 virus infection, whereas severity of H7N9 virus infections appeared lower. Continued surveillance of human infections with avian influenza A viruses remains an essential component of pandemic influenza preparedness.

“…This disease might cause losses of large numbers of animals, spread rapidly within and between countries, and entail transmission to humans. Several avian influenza outbreaks in avian species have been associated with severe illness in persons directly exposed to birds in these events ( 1 6 ). All novel influenza strains detected in humans are reportable under European Union (EU) legislation and the International Health Regulations (2005) ( 7 – 9 ).…”

“…But this is not surprising, as it is widely accepted that paediatric population is the main reservoir of respiratory viruses like influenza one (Bennett et al, 2014) (Munoz 2002). Concerning animals, all avian influenza cases were individual wild birds, which is also not unexpected as wild birds are considered to be primary avian influenza virus reservoir (Olsen et al, 2006) (Jiang et al, 2017).…”

“…So, when human and avian influenza viruses are met, exchange redeployment takes place and a new viral type is created. This new type can be more virulent and may be transferred among non-immunized humans very easily (Kang et al, 2015).…”

“…All the cases occurred in mainland China (CHP, 2018). According to an article in 2017, 12 deaths due to A(H5N6) have been reported since 2014 (Jiang et al, 2017). The virus characteristics and composition of the A(H5N6) viruses within clade 2.3.4.4 causing human infections have been described .…”
