Preliminary Evaluation of Leucaena leucocephala Seed Gum as a Tablet Binder

Abstract: The seed galactomannan of Leucaena leucocephala Lam. de Wit var.K-8 (family Leguminosae), a natural polysaccharide, with properties comparable to guar gum, was evaluated as a pharmaceutical binder. Characterization was done using studies of compressibility, micromeritic, and mechanical properties of granules prepared by wet granulation and subsequent studies on compacts, both containing 5% w/w of binder. The seed gum was subsequently used as a binder with a badly compressible material, paracetamol, and studied… Show more

“…It belongs to the family Mimosaceae. Various parts of L. leucocephala have been reported to have medicinal properties ranging from control of stomach diseases to contraception and abortion and the seed gum has been reported to be useful as a binder in tablet formulation (Deodhar et al, 1998;Verma & Balkishen, 2007). Sulfated glycosylated form of polysaccharides from the seeds was reported to possess significant cancer chemo-preventive and anti-proliferative activities (Gamal-Eldeen et al, 2007).…”

“…This finding may be owing to higher chances of surface migration of the low viscosity solution of Byco-O. Byco-A has shown a relatively lower rate of fines generation and high tensile strength, which may be attributed to uniform distribution of binder as observed by Deodhar et al 9 The resistance of granules to crushing provides uniform granule size regardless of the extent and type of normal handling during processing. It can be determined by various methods.…”

“…Friability of granules was determined by the method described by Deodhar et al, 9 in which 10-g granules were placed with 20 polyethylene balls in a ball mill (Seema Enterprises, Pune, India) and rotated for 5, 10, 20, and 30 minutes, with sieve analysis done at each time interval. The friability index (FI) as a function of time was determined using the Rubinstein equation.…”

“…soft, ductile powders have lower yield values. A low value tends to favour plastic deformation during compaction as a result of the rebonding of smaller primary crystals (Niwa et al, 1994;Deodhar, 1998) and also reflect low resistance to pressure, good densification and easy compression (Jivraj, 2000). From Table II, the sun dried Okra sample gave a lower P y than oven dried sample.…”
