Preliminary findings of how visual demonstrations of changes to physical appearance may enhance weight loss attempts

Abstract: This study reports how showing a person an illustration of themselves following future weight-loss might impact on their actual future weight-loss. Weight was recorded weekly, 8 weeks before and 8 weeks after the intervention. A significant proportion of the 44 participants lost weight following the intervention: 17 vs. 29 (P = 0.01, chi-squared = 6.559). After the first 8 weeks, the mean change in weight was -0.32 kg [standard deviation (SD): 2.2, P = 0.37]. The weight change after the second 8 weeks was -0.9… Show more

“…A sample size of 150 was determined to have the power to detect a 1-kg weight difference between groups, which was the mean weight difference seen at 8 weeks in the pilot study [9]. A total of 145 participants, slightly fewer than the target number, were recruited over 8 months from November 2013 to August 2014, when the recruitment phase period concluded.…”

“…Furthermore, enhancing one's attractiveness is a primary motivation for tanning in adolescents both in Brazil and worldwide [43,48,49]. In addition, the success of appearance-based photoaging intervention mobile apps, in which an image is altered to predict future appearance in the fields of tobacco and adiposity prevention, shows promise for these interventions in behavioral change settings [50][51][52][53][54][55].…”

“…Programs designed to demonstrate face-aging and face-morphing have proven to be effective in settings where behavioral change is the goal, including for skin cancer [30,31,32], obesity [33], and tobacco use [34]. Desktop face-aging programs, in which an image is altered to predict future appearance, have been shown to be effective in convincing females aged 14–18 years to quit smoking, and even increased abstinence at 6 months among adults aged 18–30 years of both genders (abstinence levels of 27.5% in the intervention group and 6.3% in the control group) [35,36].…”
