Studying the carbon effect of land use in watersheds is important for mitigating global warming, promoting coordinated emission reduction in different regions within the watersheds, and realizing high-quality development of the watersheds. Although a number of scholars have carried out relevant studies in the past, they mainly focused on carbon emissions, rarely involved the carbon balance formed by carbon sources and sinks, and lacked relevant studies on the development of low-carbon economy sub-region. Based on this, this study takes the Yellow River Basin as an example, explores the spatial and temporal evolution of carbon emissions from land use in counties in the Yellow River Basin from 1980 to 2020, and predicts the spatial pattern of carbon income and expenditure from land use under natural conditions in 2030 and 2060 using the PLUS model; and then superimposes on the main functional area planning, divides 735 counties in the Yellow River Basin into six low-carbon economic development subregions, and analyzes their economic development The model of their economic development is analyzed. The results show that: (1) the spatial and temporal differentiation of land use carbon balance in the Yellow River Basin has changed greatly over the past 40 years, (2) the spatial distribution pattern of land use carbon balance in the natural context in 2030 and 2060 is more similar to that in 1990, (3) the carbon emission reduction potentials and pattern optimization of the different low-carbon economic development subregions differ greatly, and they have different low-carbon economic development patterns. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for scientifically and rationally formulating economic policies for low-carbon development in the counties of the Yellow River Basin, and also provide an important reference for related studies in other similar basins or regions in the world.

IntroductionThe implementation of the 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River has provided a crucial opportunity for the recovery of rare and endangered diadromous species, such as Coilia nasus.MethodsIn this study, we utilized electronic length–frequency analysis (ELEFAN) and length-based Bayesian biomass estimation (LBB) method to fit the body length data of C. nasus from the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent sea areas before and after the fishing ban (2019-2023), and the resource changes of C. nasus population were evaluated. Additionally, combined the catch production monitoring data from 2020 to 2022, we comprehensively analyzed the impact of the Yangtze River fishing ban on the recovery of C. nasus resources.ResultsThe results showed that: (1) The proportion of quantity, weight and occurrence frequency of C. nasus in catches showed a significant increasing trend year by year. (2) 4,994 C. nasus were caught from 2021–2023, with body lengths ranging from 13–410 mm. In 2023, the average body length and weight of C. nasus had increased by 39.93% and 133.89%, respectively, from those in 2021. (3) ELEFAN estimated that the growth parameters after fishing ban, including asymptotic length, growth coefficient, and the theoretical age at length zero, were determined to be 42.92 cm, 0.43 year-1, and -0.31 year, respectively. The total mortality rate, fishing mortality rate, and exploitation rate were determined to be 1.47 year-1, 0.79 year-1, and 0.54, respectively. (4) LBB estimated that the relative fishing mortality of C. nasus before the fishing ban increased from 1.22 in 2019 to 2.65 in 2020, while the relative biomass decreased from 0.34 to 0.22. After the fishing ban, the relative fishing mortality decreased from 0.85 in 2021 to 0.06 in 2023, and the relative biomass increased from 0.26 in 2021 to 0.90 in 2023, with a significant increase in 2022, indicating a clear recovery trend in C. nasus resources.DiscussionBy quantifying the resource characteristics of C. nasus before and after the 10-year fishing ban on the Yangtze River, this research revealed the impact of the ban and provided a reference for future systematic evaluations of the C. nasus population.

The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil respiration (Rs) plays a crucial role in evaluating the carbon budget of terrestrial ecosystems under global warming. However, the variability in Q10 along soil moisture gradients remains a subject of debate, and the associated underlying causes are poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of Q10 changes along soil moisture gradients throughout the whole growing season and to assess the factors influencing Q10 variability. Changes in soil respiration (measured by the dynamic chamber method) and soil properties were analyzed in a poplar plantation located in the suburban area of Beijing, China. The results were as follows: (1) Q10 increased with the increasing soil water content up to a certain threshold, and then decreased, (2) the threshold was 75% to 80% of the field capacity (i.e., the moisture content at capillary rupture) rather than the field water-holding capacity, and (3) the dominant influence shifted from soil solid-phase properties to microbes with increasing soil moisture. Our results are important for understanding the relationship between the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration and soil moisture in sandy soil, and for the refinement of the modeling of carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems.
