“…In contrast, reports of the effect of CBZ on the disposition of phenytoin are controversial. While some authors have reported that CBZ induced a fall in the plasma phenytoin level [6][7][8][9], others found that the serum phenytoin level was elevated during co-medication with CBZ [10-131. There are several possible explanations for the controversy; phenytoin is highly bound to serum proteins, and CBZ may displace phenytoin from the binding sites; CBZ may also inhibit phenytoin metabolism, or, as is well known as an enzyme inducer after chronic use, phenytoin metabolism may be induced by CBZ co-administered. It is also possible that the absorption of phenytoin may somehow be affected by CBZ.…”

“…Blood was drawn from 75 institutionalized and 94 patients from the hospital for seizure disorders "Mara I" under chronic carbamazepine medication, once in the morning fasting and a second time 3 hrs after the morning medication at the (nearby) peak serum level (see Cereghino et al, 1973). Eight of these patients received carbamazepine as the only medication; in the others a multi-drug regimen including phenytoin, phenobarbitone, barbexaclone (propylhexedrine-phenobarbitone, Maliasin®), primidone, succinimides or various other drugs was present.…”
