Preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial activity screening of crude extracts of bird lime (<i>Tapinanthus globiferus</i>)

Abstract: Several species of the genus Tapinanthus have folkloric use by the Hausa and Fulani tribes of the Northern Nigeria as a remedy for numerous human and animal ailments including stomach ache, diarrhea, dysentery, wounds and swellings. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the stem bark of Tapinanthus globiferus, was carried out using standard method. The result of the phytochemical screening of crude ethylacetate, n-hexane extract revealed the presence of carbohydrate, flavonoids steroids and terpenes. The … Show more

“…Nine studies tested the antimicrobial activity for Campylobacter spp. through the MIC [23,24,26,[29][30][31][33][34][35], while five studies tested only through disk diffusion method [25,27,28,32,36]. Table 1 provides a summary of the studied plant extracts, plant parts, isolated compounds, diameter of inhibition, MIC, and MBC of the tested plants.…”

“…Preliminary phytochemical screening of methanol leaf extract and it fractions(n-Hexane, ethylacetate, and n-butanol) of T. globiferus growing on Tamarindus indica leaves revealed the presence of saponins, tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycoside, steroid, triterpenoids, phenols and flavonoids, ethylacetate and n-butanol fractions indicated the presence of similar constituents including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, phenols, steroid and cardiac glycoside while n-hexane contained only steroid, and triterpenoids as preseted in (Table .2).The presence of these phytochemical compounds in T. globiferus growing on other plants have been reported (Emaikwu et al, 2019). These secondary metabolites are thought to be responsible for the pharmacological activities of plant extract (Emaikwu et al, 2019).…”

“…Previously, aqueous crude stem bark extract of a related species, Tapinanthus dodoneifolius (DC) Denser has exhibited anxiolytic and antidepressant effects in mice [33] and crude methanol leaf extract of T. globiferus has been shown to exert an antidepressant effect in mice [34], and aqueous residue fractions of T. globiferus have produced significant anticonvulsant effects in rodents [35,36]. Also, hydroalcoholic and aqueous leaf extracts and fractions of T. globiferus under investigation have demonstrated significant anxiolytic activity in rodent in-vivo protocols [37,38,39].…”
