Preliminary report on isolation of mycobacteria from patients with Crohn's disease

Abstract: Several investigators have recently described the isolation of slow growing mycobacteria from the tissues of patients with Crohn's disease (CD). The primary purpose of this study was to culture and identify mycobacteria from the intestines of patients with CD and other intestinal diseases (control tissues). The culture methods were designed to eliminate most rapid-growing mycobacteria and to enhance the isolation of slow growing mycobacteria. Eighty-two surgically resected intestinal tissue samples were cultur… Show more

“…Similar isolation of the organism from Crohn's disease patients was described by Chiodini (1989), Pavlík et al (1994), and Thompson (1994). M. paratuberculosis has also been cultured in the laboratory from humans with chronic inflammation of the intestine of the Crohn's disease type, but in very rare cases (Coloe et al, 1986;Gitnick et al, 1989;Thorel, 1989;Haagsma et al, 1991).…”

“…In some studies, M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis was isolated from intestinal biopsies or feces of Crohn's disease patients (6,10,11,19,23). Furthermore, a recent study in the United Kingdom revealed a significant correlation between the presence of M. avium subsp.…”
