“…age. Subsequent investigations (Gryc and Mangus, 1947) revealed that Early Cretaceous fossils occur in part of these beds and, later still (Keller and others, 1961), that part of the sequence was of Late Cretaceous age. Present usage is to place strata above the Kingak Shale and below Tertiary beds in the Ignek Formation.…”

“…The type locality is on the south side of Red Hill in Ignek Valley, at the west end of the Sadlerochit Mountains, where about 800 m (2,600 ft) of beds are exposed along the north bank of Ignek Creek. Subsequent investigations be Gryc and Mangus (1947) and Keller, Morris and Detterman (1961) determined that the formation included both Lower and Upper Cretaceous beds. Keller, Morris, and Detterman redefined the Ignek (p. 203) to include only those rocks that were the lithologic equivalent of the Nanushuk and Colville Groups, and placed the lowest Cretaceous beds in the Okpikruak Formation, which included the basal Kemik Sandstone Member.…”

“…10 and 115). Characteristics of the strata indicate that the provenance of deposition and lithology of the source areas were considerably different than in southern Alaska during most of the Jurassic (Brosge and Tailleur, 1970;Detterman, 1973;Gryc and Lathram, 1954;Gryc and Mangus, 1954;Keller and others, 1961;Leffingwell, 1919;Reed, 1968;Reiser and Tailleur, 1969;Reiser and others, 1970;Sable, 1965;Smith and Mertie, 1930). However, marine connections with southern Alaska probably existed via Yukon Territory and east-central Alaska (Frebold and others, 1967;Jeletzky, 1962).…”

“…Payne and others (1951) mapped these rocks as the Nanushuk and Colville Groups. Gryc and Mangus (1947) and Keller and others (1961) included both Lower and Upper Cretaceous beds in the Ignek Formation. Keller and others (1961) redefined Leffingwell's Ignek Formation to include strata that unconformably overlie the Okpikruak and Kingak Formations and underlie the Sagavanirktok Formation from the Ivishak River to the Canning River and eastward.…”
