Preliminary Results From Full-Scale Gravel-Packing Studies

Abstract: This paper describes gravel-packing research performed in a transparent full-scale model well. Tests were conducted with low-viscosity conventional and high-viscosity gelled carrier fluids. Initial results demonstrate the need for properly sized gravel, and clean carrier fluids and equipment to avoid completion damage. Introduction The petroleum industry continues to use gravel packs for controlling sand production from wells completed in unconsolidated forma… Show more

“…Minor errors in the assumed diameter or Kd cause major errors in the prediction of perforation friction. Work in the area of pumping gravel-pack slurries through crossover tools is well documented 13,14 and provides additional insight into the flow of slurries through restricted openings. Table 3 shows some recommended values for use in designing fracturing treatments.…”

“…To date the procedures for gravel packing have been established through physical model tests [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] and numerical simulation [8][9][10]. The model tests have proved to be enlightening, but they are limited by scale size and the cost to conduct the tests.…”
