Preliminary Results of a Seismic Refraction Study in the Meriadzek-Trevelyan Area, Bay of Biscay

Abstract: Seismic refraction studies over the Meriadzek-Trevelyan area in the north of the Bay of Biscay have established four main geological sequences: Cenozoic (1.9 to 2.8 km/s); Cretaceous (3.2 to 4.0 km/s); lower to middle Mesozoic (4.5 to 5.0 km/s); pre-Mesozoic (5.4 to 6.3 km/s).These agree broadly with the adjoining Western Approaches and English Channel areas to the northeast. The sub-sedimentary structure between the Meriadzek Terrace and the Trevelyan escarpment is of continental origin having a block-faulted… Show more

“…In contrast, Upper Jurassic and possibly lowermost Cretaceous sedimentary rocks up to 3 km thick cap basement fault-blocks in the northern Bay of Biscay . This is in agreement with the ideas of Avedik and Howard (1979), based on seismic refraction work: they suggested that the north Biscay margin crosscuts the Western Approaches Mesozoic Basin, and that the Goban Spur margin crosscuts the structurally high Cornubian Ridge (see .…”

“…Following these observations, most workers (e.g. Avedik & Howard 1979;Montadert et al 1979b) have shown that the Western Approaches margin from the shelf to the true oceanic crust is characterized by a striking succession of tilted fault blocks beneath which occurs the S reflector (Fig. 3a).…”

“…2b). Comparison with early refraction data suggested that this reflector corresponded to the boundary between a 4.9 and 6.3 km.sec ^ layer (Avedik & Howard, 1979). De Charpal et al (1979 and Montadert et al (1979) interpreted the 6.3 km.…”
