Preliminary study of Huai Qi Huang granules delay the development of primary glomerular diseases in human

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effects of Huai Qi Huang (HQH) granules on primary glomerulonephritis patients, and to discuss its possible mechanisms. Method: Sixteen patients diagnosed with primary glomerular disease between December 2011 and December 2012 were enrolled. Their blood and urine samples were collected at day 0 (the baseline levels), 30, and 90 of receiving HQH granules orally. Levels of creatinine and cystatin C (Cys-C) in serum and urine, and total protein and albumin in urine were measured by auto… Show more

“…Fibrosis and inflammation themselves may in turn generate an increase in ROS formation [3]. Oxidative stress markers such as 4-HNE, 3-NT, and malondialdehyde (MDA) can evaluate the progression of kidney disease, suggesting that kidney damage is related to oxidative stress [26]. Shopit et al found that activation of the Nrf2/ho-1 pathway can protect kidney cells from oxidative stress [27].…”

“…According to the existing experimental results, Chinese medicine HQH can alleviate the oxidative stress damage of cells and has a certain therapeutic effect on kidney diseases. Duan et al found that in patients diagnosed with primary glomerular disease, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly lower after the administration of HQH than that of the control group [26]. HQH is also valuable in the treatment of podocyte dysfunction caused by hyperglycemia.…”

“…For instance, Huang Qi Huai (HQH) granules, which contain polygonatum, trametes robiniophila murr and wolfberry fruit, can attenuate nephrotic syndrome and postpone the development of human primary glomerular diseases. 9 , 10 Celastrol extracted from Chinese medicine Tripterygium wilfordii protects against acute kidney injury derived from cisplatin, probably through stabilizing mitochondrial function and suppressing NF-κB signaling. 11 Doctors from Nanjing children’s hospital use Li-Da-Qian mixture to treat acute glomerulonephritis, which is a kind of Chinese medicine mixture made by our hospital.…”

“…Several studies have found that Huaier cream or HQH granules can significantly protect podocyte against adriamycin-induced injury and ameliorate renal tubulointerstitial damage [ 22 , 23 ]. Duan et al show that elevated serum levels of creatinine, malondialdehyde (MDA), and two acute kidney injury (AKI) markers cystatin C (Cys-C) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) were significantly reduced under the baseline levels by HQH, while estimated glomerular filtration (eGFR) was improved [ 24 ]. Research findings of Huaier on EMT and of HQH on renal function give us a clue that HQH might delay the progression of renal fibrosis via inhibiting renal epithelium cells EMT.…”
