Preliminary Tests of a New Low-Cost Photogrammetric System

Abstract: ABSTRACT:This paper presents preliminary tests of a new low-cost photogrammetric system for 4D modelling of large scale areas for civil engineering applications. The system consists of five stand-alone units. Each of the units is composed of a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B (RPi2B) single board computer connected to a PiCamera Module V2 (8 MP) and is powered by a 10 W solar panel. The acquisition of the images is performed automatically using Python scripts and the OpenCV library. Images are recorded at different time… Show more

“…The method presented was implemented for a rock slope; however, it is also suitable for monitoring many geological processes or civil engineering structures at a variety of timescales. It can be used for monitoring landslides [18], erosion [20], debris flows, and construction [19], for example. In the context of geohazard management, multiple systems could be used and monitored in near-real time at a variety of hazard sites.…”

“…For this study, to ensure reliable long term operation and camera protection, a commercial system housing and microcomputer Cyclapse [29] was used ( Figure 4, inset A). Such systems can be designed using low cost computers such as Raspberry Pis and custom designed protective housing [19]. For this study, to ensure reliable long term operation and camera protection, a commercial system housing and microcomputer Cyclapse [29] was used ( Figure 4, inset A).…”

“…In addition, these systems are ideal for installation at sites exposed to destructive phenomena such as flash floods or mass movements. Various examples of lowcost photogrammetry implementations can be found in the field of geosciences [13,[30][31][32].…”

“…But of course, theses educational modules are based on some fundamental works such as (Luhmann et al 2014). It is obvious that not the last role for this course plays ubiquitous low-cost technologies namely low-cost photogrammetry (Alessandri et al, 2019, Gaiani et al, 2019, Zacharek et al, 2017, Santise et al, 2017, Ancona et al 2015, Kersten et al 2015, Hassani and Rafiee 2013 and UAV technologies (Azzola et al, 2019, Murtiyoso et al, 2017. So, the primary goal of the paper is curriculum development for the architectural photogrammetry course.…”
