Premenstrual Syndrome as a Predictor of Menopausal Symptoms

Abstract: Premenstrual syndrome decreased in the transition to menopause. Women who reported PMS at baseline were at greater risk of menopausal hot flushes, depressed mood, poor sleep, and decreased libido. Further studies of the associations of symptoms and changes in ovarian function are needed to elucidate the underlying symptom physiology and aid in the development of effective treatments for women during the menopausal transition.

“…According to a study by Duche et al (21), psychological and physical symptoms in a woman around the age of menopause are related to perceived social support. The lack of understanding and absence of social support bring women to the doctor's office and hospital in many cases (22). Understanding the symptoms and problems of postmenopausal women and providing them with support, accordingly, can play a positive role in improving their mental condition.…”

“…30,31 Alterations in ovarian hormone production could lead to changes in mood in women, like those with PMDs, who are sensitive to ovarian hormone fluctuations. PMDs can worsen with age, and there is clear evidence that PMDs increase the risk of a major depressive episode in women during the menopause transition, 32 which occurs in the age range of women currently transiting to and from and living on the ISS (see Table 1 and Figs. 3-6).…”
