Rodent work demonstrates that third trimester alcohol exposure leads to loss of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells, along with several pathological and plastic events in the dendritic arborization of these neurons (González-Burgos et al, 2006) as well as decreased cell numbers in the hippocampal CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus regions (Livy et al, 2003).
