Preoperative cell-mediated immune status of gastric cancer patients

Abstract: The status of cell-mediated immunity was studied in 360 patients with gastric cancer before surgery. For the skin test, tuberculin and DNCB were employed. For the in vitro test, the blastogenesis of peripheral blood lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin (PHA), the ratio of rosette-forming T cells to sheep blood red cells, and the macrophage migration inhibitory factor against autoch-thonous tumor antigens were measured. As a result, it was found that in progressive gastric cancers the cell-mediated immunity decrea… Show more

“…Although Hodgkin's disease and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are the prototypical illnesses associated with cellular immune dysfunction, impairment of cell-mediated immunity can occur with most cancers, including acute and chronic leukemia; solid organ tumors such as breast, lung, brain, GI tract, and GU tract; and following HSCT [43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51]. Additionally, irradiation and medications such as azathioprine, cyclosporine, and corticosteroids can result in cellular immunodeficiency [52][53][54].…”

“…[15][16][17][18] Many reasons may account for this. Reed and Orita et al have pointed out that patients with malignancies may have a generalized deficiency of cellular immunity itself, 19,20 but its detailed mechanism remains unknown. More recent studies suggest that the poor immune response appears to be related to the inability of the host immune system to recognize the tumor antigens rather than the inability of these antigens to induce an effective immune response, as some tumor cells do not express B7-1 and/or human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I antigens at a level to stimulate the host immune system, leading to the escape from host immunity.…”

“…The PHA response was markedly depressed in patients with gastric cancer. The degree of depression was not related to the extent of disease, although correlations had been reported [Whittaker and Clark, 1971;Catalona et al, 1973;Mekori et al, 1974;Orita et al, 1976;and Kopersztych et al, 19761. to target cells in culture led to the destruction of the target cells. We examined the activity of PHA-stimulated lymphocytes from the patients with gastric cancer by lysing the target L cells, but a significant difference was not found.…”
