Preoperative Plasma N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide Concentration and Perioperative Cardiovascular Risk in Elderly Patients

Abstract: t is very important to assess and predict risk in the cardiovascular system before noncardiac surgery. A number of cardiac indexes for predicting risk have been developed, and it is recommended to evaluate patients using these indexes and to institute preoperative medical treatment or coronary revascularization based on the results. [1][2][3][4] These clinical scoring systems, although simple to use, are somewhat inconvenient and have limitations in their predictive value, 2 whereas other cardiac investigation… Show more

“…Of the remaining studies, three reported exclusively on patients undergoing emergency surgery, 38,45,48 and one documented both elective and emergency surgeries that were classified as being high risk. 46 Certain studies investigated outcomes in a specific surgical discipline, including thoracic surgery (4), 36,50,51,54 vascular (7), 29,40,42,44,55,57,59 orthopaedic (5), 45,[47][48][49]60 major abdominal (1), 56 oesophagectomy (1), 41 while the rest documented outcomes following a variety of surgeries performed (10), 34,35,[37][38][39]43,46,52,53,58 including a mix of general, head and neck, gynaecological, orthopaedic, vascular, urological, neurosurgery and thoracic surgery.…”

“…In recent years, several studies [59][60][61][62][63] in the literature have shown that the measurement of BNP or NT-proBNP levels in the preoperative period may help identify patients at risk for cardiovascular complications and postoperative cardiovascular events. Observational studies have suggested that high BNP or NT-proBNP levels in the preoperative period are independent predictors of perioperative cardiovascular complications in noncardiac surgeries.…”
