Objective The main objective was to test the indirect effects of emotional competence (EC) after diagnosis (T1) on the health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) after surgery (T2) of esogastric cancer patients via fewer anxiety and depression symptoms (T2). Methods Data were collected from 30 French centers via the clinicobiological database French EsoGastric Tumors (FREGAT). Two hundred and twenty‐eight participants completed a self‐reported questionnaire at T1 and T2, assessing their EC (Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC)), HRQoL (EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire‐Core (QLQ‐C30)), and anxiety and depression symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)). Regression analyses were used to test the direct effects of intrapersonal and interpersonal EC on their anxiety/depression symptoms and HRQoL at T1 and T2. The PROCESS Macro in SPPS v.22 with bootstrap methods was used to test the indirect effects of intrapersonal and interpersonal EC at T1 on HRQoL at T2 via anxiety and depression symptoms. Results EC predicted fewer anxiety and depression symptoms of patients at T1 and T2 and better HRQoL at T1. EC at T1 also predicted a better HRQoL at T2 via fewer anxiety and depression symptoms at T2. Conclusions Patients who tended to use their EC in daily life could be more effective in regulating the emotional impact of the cancer diagnosis and surgery. This explains why they reported fewer anxiety and depression symptoms, which in turn enabled a better perceived HRQoL after surgery. Therefore, reinforcing the use of patients' EC in daily life following their diagnosis could decrease their emotional distress and, in this way, improve their HRQoL in the preoperative and postoperative stages.

Background: Stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy suffered severe distress. This study aimed to align the Cancer-related Distress Management Guidelines into clinical practice among stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, and to monitor the implementation process of Cancer-related Distress Management Guidelines, evaluate the effects of guidelines implementation, and maintain the guidelines implementation in clinical practice.Methods: A Guideline Adaptation and Implementation Planning Resource (CAN-IMPLEMENT) was used as the research framework, which include three phases. Here the Implementation Part (Phase 2 and Phase 3) was reported: alignment of Cancer-related Distress Management Guidelines in clinical practice among stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, and process monitoring and outcome evaluation of Cancer-related Distress Management Guidelines.Results: After the guidelines implementation, the formal audit criteria, working pathways, assessment tools, multidisciplinary panels, training manual for healthcare professionals, education and handbook for patients and their caregivers of distress management were developed on institutional level, as well as the related assessment tools and record forms. The completion rate of distress management record was increased from 0.0% to 97.9% (P<0.001). The compliance of most items in the audit checklist for medical staff's distress management were improved, from 57.1% to 100.0% (P<0.001). The distress positive rate of stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy was decreased from 22.7% to 9.3% (P<0.05), and the distress scores were declined from 2 (0-9) to 0 (0-7) (P<0.001).Conclusions: The completion rate of distress management records increased significantly after guidelines implementation, revealing the process quality control of the distress management practice was good. At the institutional level, this guidelines implementation promoted the establishment of distress management system. To healthcare professionals, the guidelines implementation improved the distress management compliance. For stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, distress management practices can effectively improve the distress of stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

BackgroundCancer‐related distress (CRD) is widely experienced by people with cancer and is associated with poor outcomes. CRD screening is a recommended practice; however, CRD remains under‐treated due to limited resources targeting unique sources (problems) contributing to CRD. Understanding which sources of CRD are most commonly reported will allow allocation of resources including equipping healthcare providers for intervention.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review to describe the frequency of patient‐reported sources of CRD and to identify relationships with CRD severity, demographics, and clinical characteristics. We included empirical studies that screened adults with cancer using the NCCN or similar problem list. Most and least common sources of CRD were identified using weighted proportions computed across studies. Relationships between sources of CRD and CRD severity, demographics, and clinical characteristics were summarized narratively.ResultsForty‐eight studies were included. The most frequent sources of CRD were worry (55%), fatigue (54%), fears (45%), sadness (44%), pain (41%), and sleep disturbance (40%). Having enough food (0%), substance abuse (3%), childbearing ability (5%), fevers (5%), and spiritual concerns (5%) were infrequently reported. Sources of CRD were related to CRD severity, sex, age, race, marital status, income, education, rurality, treatment type, cancer grade, performance status, and timing of screening.ConclusionsSources of CRD were most frequently emotional and physical, and resources should be targeted to these sources. Relationships between sources of CRD and demographic and clinical variables may suggest profiles of patient subgroups that share similar sources of CRD. Further investigation is necessary to direct intervention development and testing.
